In a heartwarming moment of international solidarity, a team from Germany recently visited our community in Kabwohe to engage with a group of local women and out-of-school girlsβmany of whom were deeply affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Gathered under the shade of a tree and fueled by purpose, these women and girls showcased their beautiful weaving and knitting skillsβcrafted entirely from locally sourced materials. From sisal baskets to handmade mats and yarn-knit accessories, every item told a story of resilience, creativity, and cultural pride.
βWe were inspired by their strength,β one of the visiting team members said. βDespite the setbacks of the pandemic, these young women are creating beauty, building skills, and reclaiming their future.β
πΎ The Project at a Glance
This weaving and knitting initiative is part of our Women and Girls Empowerment Program, which provides:
- π§Ά Skills training in weaving, knitting, and handicrafts
- π Mentorship from local artisans
- πΌ Opportunities for income generation
- π« Counseling and psychosocial support
- π Alternative education pathways for out-of-school girls
The girls, many of whom dropped out during the COVID-19 lockdowns, now find a safe space where they can rebuild their confidence and gain practical skills that help support their families.
π¬ Voices From the Ground
Nabirye, a 17-year-old participant, shared:
βI thought my dreams had ended when I left school. But here, I have found a new beginning. I am learning, creating, and earning.β
The visiting team from Germany took time to sit, talk, and learn a few weaving techniques themselvesβdeepening the cross-cultural exchange and creating bonds that extend far beyond borders.
π€ Looking Ahead
This interaction has opened doors for possible collaborations between Encomium and partners in Germany to:
